Transition to School

You must make sure that you register your child for school and take them on some school visits when they are near to turning five.

At Haleema Kindergarten, we have determined some key goals for our daily Transition to School lessons, initially this will be for children aged from 4 years 3 months:

Areas we focus on with the children:

  • practice writing their name in lower case e.g. sam
  • learn to listen to the teacher - pay attention
  • learn to reply when they are asked a question
  • talk about looking after their own belongings
  • practice writing the alphabet
  • practice writing numbers
  • play literacy and numeracy games
  • play board games requiring turn taking
  • ensure they have proficient self-help skills (eating and toileting)
  • ask local new entrant teachers to visit
  • visit local primary schools
  • listen to books, recall parts of the story
  • visit Taita Library, talk about how to handle and look after books
  • talk about starting school and school visits
  • build their confidence to speak up in front of a group
  • know how to use scissors
  • capable of completing a puzzle
